Being a runaway princess isn't always as fun as people think...
Stuck in the human realm when the world ended, Rhianna just kept on running...until the wolves at her heels caught up and she uncovered a plot to bring back civilisation in the worst possible way.
All she has to do, is stop the plot before any more innocents end up dead.
-
Wolf Blessed is a paranormal apocalyptic reverse harem and Rhianna's complete story.
Chapter One
I never thought I’d regret running away from the fae realm. I would admit that I was second guessing that decision now. Maybe it was the burning building off to the left. Or the fact I hadn’t eaten decent food in almost five years.
Or maybe it was simpler than that still. The seasons had stopped working at all and being tied to one of them from the moment I was born, that was taking its toll on me.
A howl sounded in the distance, sending a shiver down my spine.
Those wouldn’t be just wolves. Animals had mostly died out. Along with most of the humans. It meant the world was simultaneously safer and more dangerous for paranormals.
Other than the fae.
So...me, basically.
I swung my backpack on and prepared myself to move. The wolf shifters were closer than I was comfortable with. Ever since I’d learned the fae were blamed for this mess of a world we were living in, I’d made it my mission to stay as far away from anyone as possible. I didn’t actually know what would happen if I got caught, but I wasn’t exactly in a hurry to find out.
Without looking back, I set off at a run, trusting myself so I wouldn’t trip and hoping the weather wouldn’t turn. It was a clear mild day at the moment, but that meant nothing now. Within minutes, the sky could cloud over and hail begin to rain down on us all. Or the sun would flare up and it would be so hot we could swim in our sweat.
Even as one of the fae, I’d been surprised to discover just how much control we had over the weather. Though I also knew what had been done wasn’t reversible, even if a lot of people thought it would be if they caught one of each fae. Of course, the main issue there was the lack of us on this side of the portal to begin with. They might find some male half-fae, but they weren’t likely to find the full-blooded female fae they needed.
The thought was a little ironic for me to have considering I was one of the four fae princesses. Maybe the others had been stupid enough to run away too.
My toe caught on something and my balance tipped to the side. Without fully realising what was happening, I crashed into the ground scraping my knees and ripping my jeans.
Shit.
Blood, no matter how little of it, was never a good thing. Some shifters could smell it from miles away, and as far as I could tell, the wolves were closer than that still.
I slipped my arms beneath me and pressed upwards. I needed to move fast. If possible, even more so than before.
“You really haven’t made it easy to find you.”
I stopped moving as the male voice registered in my ears.
Double shit.
Slowly, I peered upwards, a lump catching in my throat. Everything about the man stood in front of me screamed hunter, and I knew at least one of the wolves had found me.
“You didn’t have to fall for me, Princess.” He smirked down at me.
Triple shit. I’d been busted.
“Who are you?” I asked, finally managing to get to my feet.
“You can call me Zeke.”
“That doesn’t answer my question,” I pointed out, as I got to my feet.
“It’s who I am.”
“Alright then, let me rephrase. What are you?”
“I think you know, Rhianna.”
My blood felt like it turned to ice in my veins. How did he know my name? That shouldn’t be possible.
“Nope, no idea.” I dusted myself off. “Who’s Rhianna?” I asked, realising it was already too late by the smug grin on his face.
“You are, Princess.”
“I’m not a Princess,” I lied.
“I suppose technically you’re not anymore, no. Your Kingdom is a little cut off from here.” Zeke grinned, the edge of wolf creeping onto his face. He had me where he wanted me and he knew it.
“Then what do you want with me?”
Why wasn’t I running away? I should be doing that...right? Not stood here talking to a wolf shifter who was more than likely planning on eating me. Or capturing me and using me for my magic. One of the two, it was sometimes hard to tell.
“We’ve been looking for you for years.”
“Not possible.”
“Completely possible. Your mother sent us after you.”
Quadruple shit.
“Well, it’s not going to do her any good to have found me now,” I responded cheerfully. “I’ll be on my way.”
I forced a grin on my face and turned to leave, desperate to get away from the man and the strange allure he seemed to have over me.
Something knocked me off balance, and while I tried to save myself, all I ended up doing was falling back to the floor with a thump.
I swallowed loudly as I took in the second wolf shifter who’d arrived.
And the third.
And fourth.
Damn it, what was the word for five times shit? Quintuple shit? That just made it sound like I was making up words.
“Look, I don’t know what you want with me, but I just want to be left alone.” To be honest, that was all I ever wanted in life. The end of the world wasn’t all that bad for introverts. “I don’t have much stuff either, but you’re welcome to it.”
I squirmed about a bit, removing my backpack and shoving it towards their leader. Hopefully he’d take it as a peace offering and not take me. Although…
Best not go there. It wouldn't do to be acting on thoughts like that. It meant putting myself in an even more vulnerable place. Not that sitting on the floor with four ripped wolf shifters looking down at me like I was the catch of the day wasn't vulnerable.
Huh.
In some ways, I probably was the catch of the day.
"We don't want your supplies," Zeke told me.
"Then what do you want?" I asked, fluttering my eyes to try a completely different tactic.
The wolf with a shock of dark brown hair cleared his throat. "That's not going to work on us."
"It's not?" I infused as much innocence as possible into my tone.
“We want you,” Zeke clarified.
“Great, well I’m off the market. The end of the world put a stop to that one.”
"Because the end of the world means you can't have protectors?" one of the wolves asked.
"In case you hadn't noticed, I've done pretty well for myself without you," I pointed out.
"Until now."
"Yes, until now. But it's been five years and I'm still alive and kicking. I think that says enough for my ability to actually take care of myself."
Zeke chuckled dryly. "If only that was all it took, Princess. We were told to bring you home."
It was my turn to laugh.
"Seems unlikely, the fae realm is sealed off."
"What if we had a way to get there?" He raised a questioning eyebrow, but I wasn't going to let him have that.
"Then I'd have to thank you for your offer, but no thank you."
"Why don't you want to be a Princess?"
I turned away from Zeke to look at the man questioning me. He was by far the smallest of the four of them. Not that it meant anything. All of them were tall, though not that much taller than I was, and all of them were ridiculously handsome. In fact, they had more muscle on them than they should considering the circumstances. I was barely more than a skeleton in skin from too many days without proper food.
"I don't not want to be a Princess," I countered.
"Then why run away in the first place?"
"I don't think that's any of your business..." I paused, waiting for him to supply a name. He didn't. That was annoying.
"It is our business," Zeke replied. "We're supposed to be your honour guard."
"Well then, go honour guard someone else, I don't need your help."
I made my way to leave, only then noting how unintimidated I was by the men. Being on my own, in a place where no one cared if I screamed, even if they could hear it, with four men should have all my inner alarms going off. Instead...nothing. Absolutely nothing. It was like my body knew who they were and was fine with it, which was beyond stupid. I'd never met my so-called honour guard before. I didn't need one.
"It's not up to you."
"I think it is." Inwardly, I seethed, but I didn't let that show on my face. As little as I wanted to be a Fae Princess in this world, I wouldn't let my good breeding and training go to waste. Politeness in the face of annoying wolf shifters was the best course of action.
"Rhianna..." He reached out, but I swatted his hand away.
"Never use my name again," I hissed. "It's not yours to use. Nor will it ever be."
I didn't wait for him to respond. I didn't need to. I was done with them all and I hardly knew them. That might be unfair of me in some ways, but I wasn't st
ill alive in this hostile world for no reason. I looked after me. No one else had anything to do with that.
